  • Atindranath Dutta, the police officer who was abducted by Maoists and held captive for two days before being released, on Monday reported back for duty as the officer-in-charge at the Sankrail police station. However, he was allowed to first take charge and then relinquish it at the Midnapore Police Lines. Dutta was later posted as a sub-inspector at the Midnapore Police Lines.

“I am feeling good,” Dutta, who has been asked by his seniors not to speak to the media, said. Dutta reached the office of West Midnapore’s Superintendent of Police around 12.30 pm, where he signed the office register as the OC of Sankrail and joined duty. However, he did not return to Sankrail police station from where he was abducted by the Maoists on October 20.

“He formally joined as the officer-in-charge of the Sankrail Police Station. But later, he was removed from that post. At present, he is working as a sub-inspector in Midnapore Police Lines. We will decide on his posting later,” said West Midnapore SP Manoj Verma.

Asked why Dutta was being transferred from Sankrail, Verma said, “He had communicated his reservations to us. It is a departmental decision.”

Dutta, who was released on October 22, was served two notices by the West Midnapore SP, asking him to join duty as soon as possible. Dutta went to the SP along with his family members. “We are happy he has joined duty. As of now, he is happy,” said Sanjib.
