Sarabha Nagar gurdwara to start self-defence course for women

Following the Delhi gangrape, the Sarabha Nagar Gurdwara Management Committee has decided to soon start a course in self-defence for women.

To begin with, a course of judo and karate will be started. Besides, women will also be told how to take care of themselves in case any untoward incident happens. The gurdwara will also hire experts to talk on self-defence.

President of the committee Jatinder Singh Sandhu said a project for women and children would be started in the gurdwara very soon. Already, the gurdwara management is contributing towards environment by organising flower shows, events on female foeticide, pollution and many other social issues.

On Friday, Sandhu was present in the protest organised against the Delhi gangrape.

Durga Mata Mandir president Subash Duggal and Gulam Hassan Kausar of Jama Masjid endorsed the view of educating and training the girls in self-defence.

International Human Rights Organisation (IHRO) chairperson D S Gill described the plight of women in India. IHRO general secretary Mohinder Singh Grewal gave a brief history of women's harassment and rapes by security forces.

Eminent agriculture economist and Chancellor, Central Research University, Bathinda, Dr Sardara Singh Johl emphasised that education should be based on moral values and good teacher-taught relationship.

Prof Manjit Kaur Bhamber highlighted the need for educating girls.

Other speakers included Devinder Singh Mangat, Prof Ranjit Singh and Jasneet Kaur.
