Sarojini Nagar parking to equal CP rates soon

Car parking woes in Sarojini Nagar market may be a thing of the past by the month-end once the multi-level parking is opened.

Car parking woes in Sarojini Nagar market may be a thing of the past by the month-end once the multi-level parking is opened. And its usage is being encouraged as authorities have decided to increase the road-side parking rates. The surface-level charges are expected to be on the lines of parking rates charged at Connaught Place.

According to New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC),the new surface-level parking rates,Rs 10 for the first two hours and Rs 10 per hour thereafter, will be applicable once Sarojini Nagar multi-level automated car parking site is made functional by October-end. These rates are presently applicable in CP also.

NDMC sources said these rates may go up in the coming months.

However, the rates for parking in the hi-tech parking lot will be Rs 10 per hour only.

“The revision of the surface parking rates is applicable as per earlier contracts signed when the Sarojini Nagar multi-level parking was being constructed. Once it is ready, the new revised rates for surface parking will become applicable as per the contract,” an NDMC official said.

This is likely to happen by this month-end. “Presently,Rs 10 is charged for surface parking in the area for first four hours and then Rs 30 is charged for four to eight hours,’’ the official added.

Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) had also recently passed directions to MCD and NDMC to ensure that in areas where multi-level car parking sites are being constructed, the surface parking site rates be at least double of what was being charged in these multi-level sites. This has been proposed to reduce the congestion caused by roadside parking.

“We have told MCD and NDMC to ensure that surface parking rates be twice of that of multi-level parking sites. This has been proposed to discourage people from parking on roadside. We have also told them that the parking charges in the city should be in correlation with the land cost,” EPCA member,Bhure Lal said.

These proposals are to be tabled by these civic agencies in their respective council meetings. If they face any problems in implementing these orders, they will have to tell us so we can update the Supreme Court about it,’’ he added .

“We might have to review the surface parking rates again in view of the recent EPCA orders,’’ NDMC sources said.
