Unidentified assailants shot dead the sarpanch of Gajiana village on Saturday. Police have termed it a case of gang war.

According to the police,Inderjeet Singh,who belonged to the Shiromani Akali Dal,was heading towards Lopon village in his Innova to meet his relatives when he was intercepted by another car and its occupants opened fire at him. He was traveling alone.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Gurmeet Singh said: “It is evident from the crime scene that Inerjeet had tried to reverse and escape the bid on his life but his car got stuck in a water channel running along the fields. The assailants then shot him and fled with his .32 bore revolver and a .315 gun.”

He added: “This is a case of gang war. We are trying to trace the culprits. Around two months ago,a man close to Inderjeet was shot dead in Jagraon. And a few days ago,some people broke the windowpanes of Inderjeet’s car in Moga. He had fired in the air to scare the attackers away.”
