Satguru Jagjit Singh death: Controversy deepens as Thakur Uday Singh declared chief of Namdhari sect
The controversy over who would succeed Satguru Jagjit Singh deepened after his nephew Thakur Uday Singh was declared his successor at Bhaini Sahib, located 45 km from Ludhiana. Some Namdhari leaders from northern states as well as abroad announced that they will not accept him as their leader.
International Namdhari Sangat president Navtej Singh Namdhari said, "Satguru Jagjit Singh and Satguru Partap Singh had announced that none other than Thakur Dilip Singh will be their successor and those of us who were working with them as sewaks know this. More than 95 per cent of the sangat has accepted Thakur Dilip as Satguru's successor and the rest are employees of Bhaini Sahib who have certain compulsions." Added chairman of International Namdhari Sangat Jaswinder Singh, "Uday Singh is a business man. How can he a be a Satguru?"
Uday Singh was declared the officiating head of the Namdhari sect on December 14 after the cremation of Satguru. With the International Namdhari Sangat announcing Thakur Dilip as its leader, Thakur Uday was declared the next Satguru soon after.
On Sunday he appeared on the gurgaddi at Bhaini Sahib headquarters. Confirming this, president of Namdhari Darbar and former PCC president H S Hanspal said, "Thakur Uday Singh is the successor ... Only a few disgruntled persons are making false claims. The dastarbandi of Thakur Uday will be done on December 23."
