  • A Saudi lawyer says a female journalist has been sentenced to 60 lashes for her involvement in a TV show in which a Saudi man publicly talked about sex.

Rozanna al-Yami is believed to be the first Saudi woman journalist to be given such a punishment. The charges against her included involvement in the preparation of the programme and advertising the segment on the Internet.

In the programme, aired on a Lebanese satellite channel, Mazen Abdul-Jawad, scandalized Saudis by describing an active sex life.

His lawyer, Sulaiman al-Jumeii, told AP today that not trying al-Yami before a court specialized in media matters at the Information Ministry is a violation of Saudi law.

Abdul-Jawad received five years in jail and 1,000 lashes.

Discussion on sex for the purpose of education is allowed in islam.By: pamameen | 26-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward IE reporting is rather vague. Saudi Muslims represent 2% of the world Muslim population and the ultra-conservative Saudi Islam has scant recognition among the more intellectual and moderate Islam such as that of India’s.In terms of independent reason based interpreting Islam they are no where near Indian islam The Quran and the Traditions of the Prophet(pbuh) give teachings and rules on sex based matters which can be discussed on the media for instance what sort of sex relation constitutes incest, rules on sex during a wife’s monthly menses( forbidden in Islam), homo/lesbian relation(forbidden in Islam), staying together of men and women of marriageable age in the same home/hostel and matters such as consensual pre-marital sex relations( Islam forbids this even between engaged couple, but Indian law permits this, I am not sure about Hindu Law) all these can be openly discussed and there can be live TV dialogue involving the questioners and the scholars clearing their doubts.
Abdul Bari by another name...By: Beagle Boy | 25-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward I wonder if all these comments against Abdul Bari would have come if he had been called Ram Khilawan? I'm sure everyone would have appreciated his sarcasm then. He has made an excellent point that all religions need to stay in touch with the social conditions around them. Rather than remaining the most backward area of social thought, religion should lead the way. Sadly this is not the case, see examples of Roop Kanwar, Saudi Wahabists or American christians who refuse to accept Darwins theories, because they are not mentioned in the Bible, are common. To use this report as another excuse for Islam bashing, rather than reflecting on the hold of prehistoric religious ideologies in general, is idiotic. Only pseudo-hindus preach hatred and ignore the central theme of Hinduism: "Sarva Dharma Samabhava", which means "equal respect for all religions"
Gupt SatanBy: Divyesh | 26-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward So Beagle Boy you are defending Abdul Bari? Can he not speak for himself? I have a suspicion you two are the same person.
