Why you cannot afford to miss the LFW this time

SUMMER LOVE
The Lakme Fashion Week,Mumbai, which is scheduled to start on March 5,has finally decided to expunge the decidedly non-Indian nomenclatures,Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter,and opt for the more appropriate Summer/Resort 2010 to describe this season’s theme. “It’s silly to use words like spring and autumn, because we don’t have those seasons in India,” says Ravi Krishnan, managing director of IMG,Lakme’s partner for the Week. And more good news? Instead of showing collections for the next season,as is traditionally done, designers will be showing fashion appropriate to the current season. “It only makes sense to do so because this way we can fill the immediate demand created by buyers and the general public.” Besides this, the emphasis on resort wear will create a platform for Indian designers to expand their creative horizons.

DESIGNER DELUGE

This LFW,it might be more appropriate to skip the high heels and slap on those running shoes. With over 50 designers showcasing their creations,we foresee a schedule packed with serious fashion fun and lots of hectic commuting between the main show area and the stalls. Even more exciting—alongside our favourite Mumbai designers like Narendra Kumar,Nachiket Barve and Manish Malhotra,we’ll see Delhi denizens Suneet Varma and Malini Ramani. We hear it straight from Sujal Shah, head of fashion,IMG,who says,“The number of applications we’ve received from within the country—even small towns—and from abroad, show that the LFW is the most important fashion event in the country.” We hear you.

GOING GLOBAL
The LFW has been saying for years that it aims to be a global fashion event and this March it puts its money where its mouth is. British designer, and toast of the fashion world,Christopher Kane, makes his LFW debut this season. “He’s one of the youngest and most exciting designers in the world today. We’re happy that he’s coming here at such an early stage in his career,” says Shah,“He’ll be a name to reckon with in a few years and his presence at the LFW will only make the world take us more seriously.”

CROWD PULLERS
Finaaly, some sops for the adoring public. Declaring that models are an important part of the fashion industry,Anil Chopra, advisor,Lakme, says that now the crowds will be scanned to spot the Next Big Face in fashion. “We’ve only just come up with the idea of having a Lakme Face of the Day,” he says,“We’re also planning to recognise the press photographers who do such a fantastic job with the images, without which fashion is of course incomplete. But details will come in a little later.” We’ll wait with bated breath.
