Savita probe must meet needs of family, state: Irish President

Irish President Michael D Higgins has intervened in the row over the inquiry into the death of Indian dentist Savita Halappanavar saying that the probe must meet the needs of both family and the state. Savita had died of pregnancy-related complications after she was denied abortion. "The inquiry must meet the needs of the public's concern, the need of the family and meet the need of the State," he said.

Higgins' statement, made during his interaction with local journalists during an official visit to Liverpool and Manchester, is likely to step up the pressure on the government to recast the probe in response to demands of Savita's husband Praveen for a public probe.

The President also said that the probe should above all else ensure that women will be safer and get the medical services during pregnancy to which they are entitled.
