The Supreme Court directed real estate barons Ansal brothers,owners of the Uphaar cinema here,to release an interim compensation of Rs 3.4 crore to the families and injured victims of the fire tragedy in which 59 people perished in June 1997.
A bench of justices R V Raveendran and K S Radhakrishnan asked the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT) to furnish a complete list and details of the bereaved families and the surviving victims to ensure proper disbursal.
The court clarified that the amount would only be an measure subject to its final verdict on the total compensation of Rs 18.5 crore directed by the Delhi High Court on April 24,2004.
Holding the owners of Uphaar cinema,MCD,Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB) and licensing authority guilty of negligence,the court had directed the cinema owners to pay 55 per cent of the compensation award and the remaining 45 per cent of the compensation was to be borne proportionately by MCD,DVB and licencing authorities,each contributing 15 per cent of the amount.
