Taking a strict action against the change of land use without any permission by New High Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, the Municipal Corporation on Tuesday demolished six shops and two under-construction shops along with the shed on the school land.
The school committee was reportedly building the shops and shed for commercial purposes.
Rajinder Sharma, assistant town planner (zone D), who led the demolition drive, said: "MC was already investigating the matter. Also, we received a complaint from city resident Rohit Sabharwal on February 25. As a result, the shops were demolished. They were completely illegal and were being built without any permission from MC."
The total area of 1.59 acres was allotted for building school under parental scheme developed by Ludhiana Improvement Trust but it was later shifted to Ludhiana Municipal Corporation.
The school managing committee illegally changed the land use and built the shops on the land which was allotted only for running the school, said the complaint filed by Rohit Sabharwal.
The MC also demolished 10 more illegal shops and some halls in various areas like Sandhu Nagar, Chander Nagar and Baifeeti road on Tuesday.
