The Education department is yet to finalise a procedure to set cut-offs based on grades
A day after announcement of Class X CBSE results, the city schoolsboth government and privateare in a dilemma over admissions to Class XI. The UT Education department, which follows a centralised system of admission,is clueless as to how to form a merit list and ascertain cut offs for admissions to various streams in Class XI. Earlier, the department formed merit lists based on the percentages of the Class X results. The cut-offs for each stream were decided accordingly. This year, however, the students have been awarded grades and the officials are yet to finalise a procedure for admissions.
The officials claim they have received a letter from the CBSE stating that a confidential detail marksheet can be made available in case they want to make the merit list according to percentage.
Talking to Newsline,District Education Officer (DEO) Chanchal Singh said,We have an option of getting the detail marks from the CBSE for making a merit list. We may also device another formula to calculate the final rank of the students. We will work with the CBSE and hopefully finalise the procedure by next week.
If the merit list is made on basis of marks, the entire purpose of awarding grades would be defeated. The number of students is high and it will be a mammoth task to calculate marks of all students. The procedure of admission should have been devised much before, said a principal of a government school.
Interestingly, everyone, including government school principals, official in the Education department,is clueless about the admission procedure.
Meanwhile, the private schools are better placed as they do not follow a centralised system of admission.
Most of the schools have already given admissions to students on basis of their pre-board results. Now,with the final results out, they plan to conduct an aptitude test followed by a personal interview to confirm the admissions.
H S Mamik, chairman Vivek High School, and president of independent schools association told Newsline,Most schools awarded marks for pre-boards and these were taken into consideration while admitting students. In our school we plan to hold an aptitude test and an interview as well. We will also seek guidance from the CBSE.
