Schools,colleges should have solar power plants: Patil

The Governor of Punjab and UT Administrator,Shivraj V Patil,has suggested that the schools and colleges in the city should have solar power plants on their rooftops

The Governor of Punjab and UT Administrator,Shivraj V Patil,has suggested that the schools and colleges in the city should have solar power plants on their rooftops. Also,he said that Chandigarh Housing Board should install Solar Photovoltaic Power Plants on houses already constructed under the slum rehabilitation scheme and provision for the same should be made for new houses being constructed under the board.

In a meeting with the officers of the administration to review the solar energy programme,Patil exhorted the Municipal Corporation officers to take up Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant installation at their offices,all community centres,dispensaries,fire stations,among other places in a time-bound manner. He also suggested that streetlights should be solar powered so as to save conventional energy. He also suggested installation of such plants at more government residential buildings.

The Governor said such innovative technology in battery storage should be explored and used especially for small houses. He said that nowadays ‘Silicon Spray technology’ is being used instead of conventional solar panels and the possibility of the same may be explored here. He emphasised on using the latest technology with which the cost of Solar Photovoltaic Power Plants shall be affordable for domestic households.

At the meeting,Patil also reviewed the ongoing Solar Energy Programme of Chandigarh Solar city. Santosh Kumar,Director,Science and Technology apprised the Administrator of the commissioning of power projects at eight different government buildings,totalling about 500 KWp capacity,adding,about another 1300 KWp Solar Photovoltaic Power Plants at four government colleges which are under installation and are likely to be commissioned within the next two months.

Kumar also gave a presentation on the latest solar technology being practised in Germany and USA,based on his visit in June this year.
