The Federation of Associations of Private Schools in Tamil Nadu today thanked Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for striking down the proposed Samacheer (Uniform School Education System),which they said, had ‘saved’ the standard of education in the state.
Speaking to reporters here,FAPSIT president R Visalakshi said the system, proposed to be introduced by the erstwhile DMK government from this academic year would have taken the syllabus to a low level equating it to lower standards in Government schools.
An attempt should have been made to enhance the standard in government schools and not to bring down the standard in the private schools, she said.
Stating that FAPSIT was not opposed to implementation of a uniform school education system, she suggested two years of pre-school education be given in Government schools before introducing this system to equate children of both the Matric and State board syllabus.
A syllabus for nursery classes already existed in Matric board, where LKG and UKG childern learnt to read and write. But in the State board the child attended school only in the first standard. “How can a uniform syllabus be given for both these children?” she asked.
While there was gradation in matric system, the uniform system was only “cut, copy and paste,” without any continuity, she said, adding great precaution should be taken when changes are introduced in education as any failure would adversely affect a generation which cannot be easily rectified. Schools, teachers and students would require at least three to four years to adopt to the new system, she said, adding FAPSIT would soon submit a representation to the Chief Minister detailing various suggestions to upgrade the education system in the State.
