With an all-India rank of 627 in the Civil Services examination,29-year-old Balwinder Singh is among the few who scripted success despite several odds. Hailing from the rural village of Daraj in Barnala, neither physical nor financial disability could stop him from achieving his dream.
At the age of seven,Balwinder lost his right arm to polio as the treatment got delayed. Speaking to Newsline,he said,It was after Class XII that I was determined of clearing the UPSC exam. Though there are resources in villages like ours, people lack awareness. I want to fight this and work for the community as a whole.
For Balwinder,it was a do-or-die situation as it was his last chance but his patience, determination and hard work finally paid off.
While Singh pursued his education throughout in Punjabi,he says that knowing English is a plus point but not a sure shot way to success.
At IAS Study Circle,Balwinder along with 17 others who cracked the prestigious Civil Services exam, were felicitated by the faculty on Saturday. Sandeep Kaur, the daughter of a peon, who achieved the all-India rank of 138,is also a student of the coaching centre.
Professor Anil Kumar, director of the institute, congratulated the students and wished them luck for their future. I am glad to see my students tasting success and my best wishes are always with them.
