Seasons in the Sun

Is this hairdo a part of a look for a new film?
It’s summer and I felt like doing something really drastic. So I got my hair cut short up to my neck. I tend to be impulsive and there are more drastic things I have done in the past than this, like breakfast in Jaipur, getting a tattoo and piercing my belly button.

Your character in Housefull is that of a Gujarati girl. Is she,in contrast to most of your other roles, conservative?
My character Hetal is a typical second-generation NRI who has been raised in London. She is forward thinking, works in a casino and has married against her father’s wishes. But whenever she is with her father (played by Boman Irani),she becomes this simple Gujarati girl and talks in her native language. There’s a great relationship between the father and daughter except that he is upset with her for not having married the man of his dreams. She is a do-gooder who keeps trying to help people in her own way. So if there is a father looking for a match for his daughter, she will try and help him with it. She gets muddled in these matters but in her own fuddling little way.

Have you picked up Gujarati in these years you have spent in Mumbai?
On the contrary,I can understand and speak Marathi. This is my first tryst with Gujarati and I learnt the language.

The promos show all the women chasing Akshay Kumar’s character.
It’s a complicated story. I play Akshay’s wife and also Riteish’s. I also play Riteish Deshmukh’s and Akshay’s sister. It sounds like Arjun Rampal is paired opposite me but by the end of the film that might change too.

Of all the three men you are “paired” with in Housefull, with whom do you share a comfort level?
Arjun,I know from my modeling days and Akshay is someone with whom it is easy to create chemistry. Riteish and I share great comic timing which helps us elevate each other’s performances because we are constantly playing off each other. The relationship he and I share in the film is not the giddy romance but goofy and cute. There are a lot of times we both come on screen and create something much different from what is there on paper.

Do you think there is more made out of bikini scenes in films than should be?
That is because it is still a relatively new concept. It does require one to be confident of one’s body. And in the case of Housefull, this wasn’t a planned scene. We were shooting on the beach and Farah Khan came and shouted that she can’t possibly shoot on a beach with fully-clothed women.

Comedies can be regressive towards women.
My first comedy and probably the biggest hit of my career—where I discovered I have got a comic bone— was No Entry. That film is all about men having extramarital affairs and women who believe that their husband is god, which is a far cry from what I personally am. But after the release, many women came up to me and said that they could relate to those female characters. Truth is,such characters do exist in real life. But if there is something which I feel is truly regressive,I will have a word with the director and tell him so.
