Need for direct and tough action by Pak: Rice

Rejecting Pakistan's contention, the US on Wednesday night said that there is need for ‘direct and tough action’ by Islamabad even if the perpetrators of the Mumbai terror attacks were ‘non-state actors’.

"The fact is non-state actors perform from the confines of the state. There has to be direct and tough action (by Islamabad)," US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told a press conference after discussions with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi.

Her remarks assume significance in the context of President Asif Ali Zardari denying Pakistan's involvement in the Mumbai attacks, saying the terror strikes were executed by the ‘stateless actors’ who wanted to hold the ‘entire world hostage.’

Rice, who will be in Islamabad on Thursday for discussions on the issue, made it plain that ‘non-state actors’ were ‘still a matter of your (Pakistan) responsibility that somehow relates to your territory’.

"Pakistan has to act transparently, fully and urgently," she said while noting that ‘Americans understand the feelings and strong demands’ in India for bringing perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice.

Referring to the promise of cooperation given by Zardari in the investigations, she said, "we expect the pledges are going to be fulfilled."

On his part, Mukherjee said India was expecting Pakistan's response to the demarche issued to it and New Delhi will decide ‘whatever is necessary to protect the territorial integrity and safety of its citizens.’

Noting that India has suffered repeated terror strikes in important capitals during the year, he said, "the government is determined to act decisively using all means at our disposal".

Who invited RiceBy: Sunil | 04-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward Was she really invited by someone in India? I doubt.
STRINGENT ACTIONBy: N.V.SANKARAN | 03-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward It is good to hear the words of Ms.Rice. But, I think all this flurry of activities will end up in some diplomatic jingoism and when the atmosphere cools down, there will be no real action. See the response from the Pakistani government!!! They have already refused to hand-over the terrorists to India. US will not act, because they need Pakistan as an ally for their fight in Afghanistan. India should take Israel as an active partner in action for demolishing the terror camps in Pak territory, because of five reasons. 1. They have the best intelligence network in the world. 2. They have the maximum experience in fighting terrorism. 3. Once they launch their action, they go ahead with the single minded resolve to finish the job, unmindful of any external pressure from any part of the world. 4. Once Israel gets involved, it will ensure that the western powers, particularly USA and Britain also participate in the action. 5. Israel also wants to avenge the death of their people in the Nariman House. We need not worry much about the Islamic Nations. They are not going to help anyway. Otherwise, there will be no action at all. This is not to belittle India's capability in field, but Israeli involvement will strengthen India's position and reduce external pressure to avoid any direct action.
India and pakistan should exchange fanatics etc.By: Nautankee | 03-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward Sir, I think, both India and Pakistan should cooperate. Pakistan should hand over the top terrorists to India and India should hand over Ashok Singhal, Togadiya, Bal Thackarey and perhaps Advani etc. to Pakistan. It will will be like getting rid of rubbish from both sides.
Now or NeverBy: vikram srinivasa | 03-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward Pakistan based terrorist camps near Jammu and Kashmir have to be demolished under any circumstance immediately. At the times of crisis, we expect Indian government to take bold and strong steps. But, it is not happening, we have made accusations against Pakistan instead. The whole world is watching at us for the actions we undertake to defend our territory. The world will support Indian military strike against Pakistan based terrorist camps near Indo-Pak border, under these circumstances. If this initiative is not taken by the Indian government, NEVER BE PROUD OF BEING AN INDIAN.
