This year the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) elections will see a fight between alliances rather than individual organisations. With none of the groups contesting the elections independently, various unexpected alliance had already been formed and announced while the remaining are still being worked out despite only two days to go for the elections.
Following the alliance formed by front-running organisations Students’ Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) and Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) with smaller groups, another alliance was announced today by Hindustan Students’ Association (HSA) and Students’ Federation of India (SFI). UT District Magistrate Brijendra Singh has prohibited the public in general and any member thereof from forming an assembly of five or more persons, taking out processions, making speeches, raising slogans, carrying lathis within the PU premises. The order will come into force from zero hour on September 1 and be effective for three day.
The total number of total candidates contesting for the four Students’ Council posts has been reduced to 13 this year. All the four posts have been divided among the alliance members, depending on the ‘strength’ of the organisation. NSUI was able to qualify for only post (vice-president) as all the other three nominations were withdrawn. Now,within the alliance, talks are still going on for the two posts of joint secretary and general secretary reserved for HPSU.
Out of the total three candidates contesting for the post of president, none is a female candidate. The post of vice-president is reserved for girls. The alliance formations that emerged between organisations is also reflecting unusual political combinations. Both SOPU and PUSU are said to be directly or indirectly backed by the Congress have formed an alliance with various political organisations with different ideologies.
SOPU has formed an alliance with SOI,considered to be backed by Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) while PUSU has joined hands with Indian National Students’ Organisation (INSO),backed by the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD),and ABVP,affiliated to the BJP.
