Security is foremost on the Ghaziabad police’s mind, particularly since the Commonwealth Games are almost upon us.

The district police has sought from the Centre 10 crack members of the canine community, or sniffer dogs, to add to the force. At present, the police here have no sniffer dogs, officials said, adding that the request is still pending with the Union government.

Senior Superintendent of Police Akhil Kumar said the impending Games had raised the safety quotient in the district, particularly since its popular malls may play host to visiting athletes and dignitaries. Kumar said: “The proximity of Ghaziabad to the National Capital makes it inevitable for the district police to be adequately equipped. Players could visit our various shopping malls, resorts and the complexes in Sahibabad, Kaushambi and Link Road. In the wake of looming terrorist threats, we must have the required paraphernalia to deal with untoward incidents. Sniffer dogs are a part of that blueprint.”

The police have also drawn up an elaborate list of what the dogs might need. The proposal has asked for a budget to make kennels for these dogs, equipped with their very own beds. Kumar said: “These dogs will be the first of the lot in the district. They will be fed and treated accordingly.”

Each dog will be given two blankets, to be kept in the kennel. The administration also doesn’t want them to sweat it out too much when they are resting, and have put in a request for two air-conditioners and five coolers. The proposal also suggests what might be on the food menu, and would ideally like a proper kitchen for the dogs, along with a head cook.
