Despite having two processing plants in place, the citys garbage disposal system seems to be proving insufficient. Certain categories of waste cannot be sent to either of the two plants. This is creating problems for complete disposal of garbage. The city has a Garbage Processing Plant at Dadumajra and a Biomethanation Plant at Industrial Area dispose of garbage. The Biomethanation Plant was set up for doing away with animal and meat waste. The waste from the slaughterhouses is processed here. Around 1,000 to 1,500 tonnes of waste is processed daily. The processed waste is converted into gas and finally into electricity that is used for running the machines in the slaughterhouse. Officials claim that there is no residue left after processing. However, there are frequent complaints that all meat waste does not go to the plant. Some animal and meat waste from unauthorised sellers is dumped in garbage bins. From there it reaches the Garbage Processing Plant at Dadumajra where a substantial part of the garbage of the city is sent. The plant at Dadumajra, apart from being unable to process meat waste, does not accept horticulture waste. A large amount of garbage, particularly from the grain market is dumped directly into the dumping ground. Councillor Arshad Khan said that the Municipal Corporation needs to look for alternate methods to dispose of garbage. While the Garbage Processing Plant was set up,pelletisaton is not being done. That was supposed to be the last stage of processing. The Municipal Corporation needs to step in to make the Plant work. Instead of looking for land for additional dumping grounds, the processing of garbage needs to be done, said Khan. The Plant at Dadumajra was set up as a solution to the garbage problems in the city. Almost three years on however, following a Germany visit by some officers and councillors to see their technology, the processes have not been streamlined with problems arising time and again. The latest being the filling up of the dumping ground faster than expected. The issue of segregation of waste at site has been raised repeatedly. It has often been suggested that garbage should be segregated at its source by keeping separate bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. The councillors, after most of their study tours, have also made similar suggestions. However, the proposals have not taken off yet.
