‘Sehwag a class apart but hope Vijay does well’

Virender Sehwag’s absence from India’s World Twenty20 squad due to a shoulder injury has raised a few questions.

Virender Sehwag’s absence from India’s World Twenty20 squad due to a shoulder injury has raised a few questions, with national skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni saying he had no idea about the opener getting hurt. “I don’t know anything about the injury. It happened during the IPL,but I don’t know when and how it happened. Sehwag is a class player but I have always said that injuries are a part and parcel of sport,” Dhoni said here on Friday.

At a time when players are busy with the IPL,India’s next big assignment in the shape of the world championships is just around the corner, starting April 30. Sehwag had missed the last edition in England as well because of a last-minute injury and that hurt the Indian team, with the defending champions failing to make it past the league stage.

Dhoni said there was no doubt Sehwag would be missed when the team travels to the Caribbean next week. “He (Sehwag) and Gambhir have been doing a great job at the top of the innings. We just hope M Vijay ensures we won’t miss Sehwag much,” he said.

India won’t get any practice before they begin their campaign against Afghanistan but Dhoni felt it was not a big factor when most of the players were playing in the IPL. “What matters is the way we play there,” he added.

He also said that India’s international cricketers needed to be cautious of injuries. The 45 days of IPL come along with additional activities, including party nights. “All players are smart enough to know that you need to rest your body. There is no point going to a party when you are travelling the next day,” he said.

Dhoni was happy with his team making it to the IPL final twice in three editions, though he was wary of complacency. “You can’t predict these results,” he said, adding: “The team who play well on the day will win. One can’t predict anything in this format.”

Dhoni, however, refused to make any comments on the latest controversies surrounding the IPL.
