Gautam Gambhir (167) and Virender Sehwag (131) were the architects of India's unrelenting dominance as the hosts batted themselves into a position from where they can dictate terms in the second cricket Test againsr Sri Lanka here on Tuesday.

The near-capacity Green Park witnessed a lop-sided opening day, completely dominated by the Indian batsmen and their blazing blades as the hosts cruised to a mammoth 417 for two and threatened to raise a run-mountain under which they can bury their opponents.

Arguably the most evolved batsman of recent times, Gambhir first starred in a blistering 233-run partnership with Sehwag in just 41.2 overs before forging another 137-run association with Rahul Dravid (85 not out). India's unyielding grip over all three sessions had the islanders totally at sea.

Right from Mahendra Singh Dhoni winning the toss, India hardly put a foot wrong today. Sehwag and Gambhir milked 131 runs in the 26-over morning session without being separated. The Sri Lankans did manage to cut short Sehwag's explosive stay in the second session but they bled 176 runs in that 33-over segment as India consolidated their position. India did not take the foot off the pedal, adding another 110 runs in the final session losing just one wicket to consolidate their position.

Dropped on zero, Sehwag earlier slammed an insouciant 122-ball 131, bejewelled with 18 delectable boundaries and two effortless sixes. In contrast, Gambhir's was a chanceless 215-ball knock, studded with 15 boundaries. Dravid's unbeaten 85 came off 153 balls and had eight fours in it.

no mr raviBy: sundar | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward what nonsenense. how can you compare tendulkar with others. now only these players hit run feast. take previous matches in india. it is a fashion to defame tendulkar. He hits centuries in all grounds in all countries. ofcourse now even srilankans hitting 700 . these dead wickets were not there some years back. we chould keep some pitches helping spinners. otherwise our strength in spin will vanish.
Boring Indian pitchesBy: Padam Singh | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Towards lunch time, about 15 of us watching the play decided to switch off the TV. Why? A boring match, no matter how many runs are scored and who scores them. Harbhajan Singh complained the other day about pitches being batsmen friendly and that is what has happened again. We Indians are the world's most unsporting players, be it any game. And the public who watch the sport are as unsporting. We do not accept defeat even if we lose a thriller where both sides have given their all. No wonder we lose on the world stage. Had this been a proper test pitch, both bowlers and batsmen would have been tested to ther limits and intelligence. No more watching this test for us, just a glance at the papers wo see the scores will do
Lankan face fury of Indian battingBy: AjayNath | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Indians returned the runs deficit of last test match by giving befitting reply to the bowlers. Sehwag and Gambhir are in good nick & showed lankan fielder every corner of the ground. Indian batting was really awesome and enjoying. Keep it up boys, job is only half done.
Ajay these becomes chicken when facing Chin music in Australia/new zealandBy: Akshay | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Ajay these becomes chicken when facing Chin music in Australia/new zealand. It is no worth in seeing test matches in India where any ordinary batsman can spend hours without facing any testing delivery. I totally agreed that Ponting Runs thrice as worth then any of our Batsman whether he is tendulkar, gavaskar, dravid e.t.c.
What's the use of Non Sporty wickets? Why are we afraid of facing chin music?By: Ravi | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Have any body seen the first day wicket today. It is is just a nonsense wickets. What's the use of Non Sporty wickets? Why our are we afraid of Sportics wickets? It is worth seeing even a domestic match in australia etc where every body have equal chance. I think if our Ausy, English and Newzealanders batsmen make even 5000 runs in those sporting wickets then it is much worth then the 10 20 thousands runs on these dead wickets
Agreed RaviBy: Sanjay | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Agreed Ravi. The score of Ponting, hayden vaughan, fleming, Astle worth twice or thrice more then the tendulakar, Dravid,
cricketBy: SP | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The wicket might be dead but hold on guys this is only the first day. For those of you uniformed ones Tendulkar has scored about 7100 in 90 test matches away from India at an average of about 54.28 which is only slightly (0. something)less than his total average. Compare this with the great Ricky Ponting whose average in away matches falls to 49. something. Besides Tendulkar has scored at an average of 58.33 in Austarlia whereas the 'GREAT' australian has managed in 12 Tests only 438 runs at an abysmal average of 20 . something on the same FLAT wickets
Dead wicketBy: Maxi7681 | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward I totally agree, the wickets are totally dead wickets, the match is all set for a draw
