A two-day seminar on ‘Distance Education — Experiments, Practices and Challenges’ was held at the University School of Open Learning, Panjab University on Saturday.
While inaugurating the seminar, Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti called for a serious re-appraisal of the aims, objectives and structures of distance education in India.
He said the system had a pivotal role in the spread of affordable and accessible education.
He further asked the experts to have a close look at the economics of distance education and suggest ways to reduce costs and make it more affordable.
Pro Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, New Delhi, Prof K R Srivathsan, said that India needed no less than educational revolution to take full advantage of its predominantly young population.
Chairperson of University School of Open Learning, Prof Neelam Grover, was also present on the occasion.
Professor K S Rana and Dr S Rana of HP University sketched the South Asian scenario and underlined the need for regional educational cooperation in the peculiar socio-economic context of South Asia.
Professor Y K Sharma of Himachal Pradesh University said since students were the focal point in the system, support systems for them are an absolute imperative.
