The Shivaji Park police on Friday booked Devdas Borkar, organiser of Sena's Dussehra rally, for violating sound norms in a silence zone.
The party held its annual Dussehra rally at Dadar's Shivaji Park on Wednesday and police recorded a maximum of 105 decibels. According to sound rules, permissible levels in a silence zone between 6 am and 10 pm are 50 decibels.
"We recorded noise at rally throughout the evening and found that it violated the conditions under which Borkar sought permission for the rally. A case has been registered under Section 15 of the Environment Protection Act, 1986. It is a non-bailable offence and we will arrest Borkar," said senior police inspector Suresh Unawane.
Sena MLC Anil Parab said, "We are not aware of any such police complaint. We complied with all court rules during the rally."
However, noise levels recorded at the rally by anti-noise pollution activist Sumaira Abdulali of Awaaz Foundation showed they touched 98 decibels due to drums, whereas speeches took the level to a maximum of 88 decibels.
According to Awaaz, loudest speech was made by MLC Ramdas Kadam with his lowest level being 71 decibels and highest going to 88 decibels. Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray's speech was between 64 and 81 decibels.
