Four months after the Left Front regime in West Bengal was wiped out,former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Tuesday admitted that he had sensed "trouble" for his government after the panchayat elections three years ago. "I sensed trouble for us (Left Front) when the Opposition did quite well in the panchayat elections in 2008," he told a party workers' rally. Without naming the Trinamool Congress,he said the party,which was then in the Opposition,also did well in the last Lok Sabha elections. He said his government strove hard to bring investments. "And some investments also arrived." Bhattacharjee also regretted Tata Motors' Nano project at Singur not taking off. "Our government put its best efforts to ensure that the Tata Motors small car factory did not leave Singur,but it happened despite our initiatives to retain it which could have been the state's first small car manufacturing unit," he said. He lamented that his government's move to industrialise the state hit roadblocks after land acquisition in the state "snowballed into a crisis". "Land was not acquired in Nandigram,but a movement was launched that gained the support of a large section of the people," the former chief minister said.
