Separate toll booths, challans for tag-lane violators

HC will be told today about interim steps to reduce Gurgaon toll plaza

Interim measures to decongest the Gurgaon expressway include eight toll booths for vehicles moving from Udyog Vihar in Gurgaon towards Delhi, opening the gates at the 32-lane plaza if stoppage time exceeds 10 minutes and seeking permission from the court to challan non-tag vehicles entering tag lanes.

These measures were decided on Wednesday at a meeting of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the concessionaire Delhi-Gurgaon Super Connectivity (DGSCL), Gurgaon Police and IDFC Ltd.

On Thursday, these measures will be conveyed to the Punjab and Haryana High Court which had stopped the DGSCL from collecting toll for 15 days and called for a solution to ease traffic at the toll plaza.

"With eight toll booths, traffic coming from Udyog Vihar will not stop at the main toll plaza. It is estimated that around 30 per cent of the traffic comes from the Udyog Vihar side and these toll booths will substantially reduce the congestion," a senior NHAI official said.

A decision has also been taken to open the toll gates if stoppage time at the plaza is more than 10 minutes. "A limit line will be made in the lanes approaching the toll plazas. The moment idle vehicles cross that line, toll plazas will be opened until the traffic eases," the official said.

According to the official, permission will be sought from the court to challan non-tag vehicles which enter dedicated tag lanes. It was also decided to make an underground U-turn for entry to the Ambience mall. "DGSCL has also been asked to market smart cards to ensure that a large number of vehicles use them," the official said.

On Tuesday, the DGSCL signed a memorandum of understanding with the NHAI to improve finances of the company and commuter facilities at toll plazas.
