The election of Barack Obama as US President has generated hope among separatists in Kashmir that the decades-long Kashmir issue would be solved soon.

Welcoming the election of Obama, chairman of Moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umer Farooq said "We see a role for US in resolution of Kashmir issue and hope that Obama will fulfill his responsibility."

Mirwaiz, who has been placed under house arrest since Wednesday morning ahead of proposed Jamia Masjid march by separatists, said "We hope that he (Obama) will give practical shape to his encouraging statements on resolution of Kashmir during campaigning."

Meanwhile, chairman of Hardline faction of Hurriyat Syed Ali Shah Geelani said the election of Obama is a "historic event" for America and "We hope that he will use his good offices to resolve Kashmir issue in its historic perspective."

Geelani, who is undergoing treatment in Delhi, said bilateral talks between India and Pakistan have failed to deliver in the past.

Geelani also hoped that the election of Obama would bring a positive change in the foreign policy of that country.

"There is a need for a change in Americian foreign policy... It has to abandon use of brute force in other countries," he said.

"We will also welcome him if he puts an immediate end to the killings in Pakistani soil where the bombing by Nato forces deployed in Afghanistan have killed innocent civilians on the pretext of fighting Al-Qaeda or terrorism," he said.

Congratulating Obama on his election, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) said his recent statements with regard to Kashmir are encouraging.

Obama, Look for the destruction created by Pakistan and Hurryat By: Roby | 06-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward I do not know whether to laugh or weep on these so called Hurryat leaders. If my memory serves me right they are the same people who hugged and kissed Mushrarf during his visit to India. Let us ask them the question. Where is Mushraf now? They abused Mushraf once they came to know that he is going to be impeached. They will always sail in the boat that they find comfortable for themselves and it takes them no time to ditch the captain of the ship with whom they spent good time. Same thing will happen with Obama, they will treat him as their Godfather, however, the day Obama starts taking a balanced view on Kashmir they will start abusing him and America. Obama can't ignore the sufferings of minorities of Kashmir who were driven out by these leaders under the fear of Gun. These are the same people who killed thousands of minorities in Kashmir and now they have choosen GANDHIGIRI. Let me conclude that the cat went for Haj after eating hundred rats.
Geelani 's treatment in India -By: Johann D'souza | 06-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Why the Hell , India allows these guys treatment in Delhi when these guys only think of India's destruction. The government of India is pathetic and these things could only happen here in our country , no where else would this be tolerated.
Separatist By: Ashutosh Kaul | 06-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Obama has declared his strong opposition to Muslim terrorism. This separatist group of kashmiri terrorists have no reason to be hopeful of Obama's intervention. Apart from all the disservice these so called leaders have done to the Kashmiri populace by damaging their relationship with rest of the Indian nation; this invitation to America to meddle is simply the most suicidal one. If Gilani and Omer farooq had their heads screwed right they would have realized that wherever America has gone, the issues have only got complicated rather than resolved. Iraq, Afghanistan and now Pakistan are too recent to forget. Anyway what makes them think that India will allow it ? These people are either simpletons, which does not sound right; or they are the worst kind of cunning crooks. This is just another statement addressed more to their constituency in valley than anything serious. Just to keep people agitated enough to keep their blinkers on .
Solution to the Kashmir issueBy: Indian | 06-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Obama is free to meddle in Ind. affairs and our Cent. govt can try and hand over K/mir to Pakistan.I warn the Central Govt that if it has any such ideas of handing over K'mir to Pakistan solely because it is a Muslim majority state, then there will be hell to pay.Firstly,India is not going to be partitioned once again. If that becomes a reality, this time every member of a particular minority community from what is left of India, must go to that 'Islamic' paradise, without any compensation! If that is not possible then allow other states to secede from the Indian Union too on grounds of language and ethnicity.States like Tamil Nadu,Maharashtra,Gujrat,Karnataka will progress far better if they are outside the squalid state of affairs in India, which is dominated by dhoti clad, illiterate politicians from UP and Bihar who look up to an Italian for guidance! If K'mir is allowed to separate, the Central Govt can bid the concept of India goodbye. There will be hell to pay!Don't say u were not warned!
The Indian EntropyBy: Christie, Ph.D | 08-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward I think The Indian is abolutely right. Why should progressive states like TN, Punjab, Maharashtra, Gujaret shold carry the burden of the dumb BHIMARU states. Let them break away, like the great USSR dfragmented itself into more than a dozen nations
welcome ObamaBy: Rohit | 06-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Look these cunning clowns are dying for attention ! Congratutaions to Obama I sincerly hope he destroys the fountainhead of islamic terrorism that lies right in Pakistan.
