Separatists not interested in this ‘azadi’ offer

“It has something to do with the Congress' intra-party politics in the state unit,” a Hurriyat leader said.

While Sham Lal Sharma’s advocacy of ‘azadi’ has created a stir in Delhi, the separatists in the Valley have chosen not to respond. Separatist leaders privately say the opinion of a state-level Congress president just isn’t weighty enough.

“It has something to do with the Congress’ intra-party politics in the state unit,” moderate Hurriyat leader Shahidul Islam said. He said it was not necessary for the Hurriyat to respond to every issue that crops up.

Similarly, there hasn’t been any response from the hardliners led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

The position of the separatists on the future of the state remains well articulated. Both Mirwaiz and Geelani stand for a united Jammu and Kashmir and a political settlement has to encompass the entire state. “Jammu and Kashmir is one state and when we talk of a permanent Kashmir solution,it means for all three regions of Jammu,Kashmir and Ladakh,” hardline Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akber said. “It is the entire Jammu and Kashmir whose resolutions on plebiscite are pending with the United Nations. So,while it is good if somebody advocates ‘azadi’ for Kashmir,we are against Jammu and Ladakh being hacked off from the state”.
