  • Expressing confidence that the new government at the Centre will make efforts to speed up the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal project, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said on Thursday that its early completion would help in the industrial development of south Tamil Nadu.

Inaugurating the Rs 616 crore Ramanathapuram combined Drinking Water Scheme from Chennai via video conferencing, Karunanidhi said the Sethusamudram project would also usher in employment opportunities.

"The project will ensure development of industries in South Tamil Nadu, including Ramanathapuram, besides ensuring employment opportunities. The socio-economic condition of people will improve," he said expressing confidence that the project will be implemented by the UPA government.

"I am confident the new Central government will make efforts to speed up and complete the project, 60 per cent of which has already been completed, he said.

Attributing "conspiracy" by some persons for going to court, he said the legal tangle will be overcome to implement the project.

The work on the project has been stalled as the Supreme Court has reserved orders on the project and appointed an expert Committee headed by noted environmentalist RK Pachauri.

The court was approached on the grounds that the present alignment would damage the 'Ramar sethu,' a bridge believed to have been constructed by Lord Ram.

Food for ThoughtBy: Ravana | 12-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Mr Ram, If there is a God , and if he chosses to intervene, he need to Glorify the humanity as a whole and not a specific religion as you have mentioned.God can not have religion , and if he has one, he can not be a God.Incidentally, there are several issues which are more vital to human being right now,You mean to say the so called God is more keen to glorify his religion than attending to other vital issues. If he does, is he a God?Just a food for thought.
He can also make moneyBy: KUMAR | 12-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Mr Karunanidhi is hell bent on implementing this project for his monetary benefits nothing else he is not even 1% bothered about the developement of Tamil Nadu or India. His only agenda is to increase his wealth and to safe gaurd his family.
Break Ram Sethu movementBy: Ram | 12-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward M.Karunanidhi is heading the "Break Ram Sethu movement" and he is doing as much that he could do to break the ancient heritage bridge. Subramania Bharathi, the great tamil poet and a great visionary has written in his poem as "Elevate the Ram Sethu bridge to make a motorable path between India and Sri Lanka, thereby connecting the two countries". MK is doing the right opposite action to the visionarie's dream that of dredging across the Ram Sethu. I beleive in the Supreme being and I am really interested to know whether it is Ram or M.Karunanidhi, who will emerge victor. I request the UPA government lead by Sonia to try it's best to break the Ram Sethu so that Hinduism can regain it's peak glory in India by God's intervention.
