The Operation and Maintenance Cell of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation operation is yet to clean the sewer line near the shoe rack of Gurdwara Dukhniwaran Sahib in Field Ganj, which is the end point of the sewer lines coming from Vishvkarma Chowk and Campa Cola Chowk. The project to clean sewer lines started in June, before the onset of monsoon,in Dholewal and adjoining areas; but water-logging continued to be a major problem as authorities did not take up the matter with the gurdwara management. And now,the project seems to have been shelved because the monsoon is over and chances of water-logging are far less. Councillor Sarabjit Singh Kaka raised a hue and cry over this and said that despite cleanliness at Dholewal and adjoining areas, the problem will not be solved until the end point is cleaned. Kaka Even today the problem exists, but we are waiting for the next monsoon. The cleaning drive has been begun again, but this time towards Gill road and its adjoining areas. It will take time for the drive to reach gurdwara sahib area, Kaka told Newsline. It is learnt that president of the gurdwara management,Pritpal Singh, had said he is ready to co-operate with the MC authorities if by any case the sewer blockade is due to lack of cleanliness of one manhole; but for that, the MC has to come forward. Kaka said: Two sewer lines start from Dholewal and Campa Cola Chowk, which are 24x36 inches in diameter and converge near the gurdwara in a 56-inch wide sewer line. This has not been cleaned for more than 20 years. The MC engineers checked the discharge flow and deduced that the 56-inch opening has been reduced to only 18 inches due to filth. As the line is choked, the sewage flows back and the chowk is submerged even when it drizzles. Even if the encroachment is not removed, the line can be cleaned from outside the shoe rack by extending it.
