Amid a string of derogatory comments made by politicians against their rivals, groups of sex workers and transgenders have approached West Bengal State Human Rights Commission urging it to intervene into the issue and stop the politicians from making comments that portray them in poor light.
Forward Bloc general secretary Debabrata Biswas's remark calling Trinamool Congress as "political prostitute" has offended the sex workers who want the human rights panel to take action against such leaders.
"Does a prostitute has no respect?" asked Bharati Dey, general secretary of Durbar Mohila Samanway Committee — an association working among the sex workers throughout West Bengal. "We have demanded that the Human Rights Commission must intervene so that no politician could muster the courage to use words which are derogatory and denigrate sex workers," Dey said.
Alleging that such comments have lowered the prestige of sex workers, the Dubey said: "We have been working among the sex workers for so many years and our attempt is to reinstate them in the society. If the politicians make comment like this, what will the others do?".
The Association of Transgenders in West Bengal too has lodged a similar complaint with the rights panel. The group has taken offence of Trinamool Congress leader and minister Firhad Hakim's comment where he said that Forward Bloc was a party of eunuchs.
"The minister's remark has violated the human rights of eunuchs," the group said and demanded action against them.
