A member of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad,Sanju Malakar, was shot at today at Bongaon college in North 24 Parganas after he protested against the strike called by the Students Federation of India (SFI),said TMCP sources. Malakar, who was admitted in the SSKM hospital for treatment,is critical, said Chattopadhyay.
In response to the strike called by the SFI today in protest against the killing of Howrah college student Swapan Kole allegedly by Trinamool supporters during campus violence on Thursday, educational institutions in Kolkata and other parts of the state remained closed.
The SFI supporters held demonstrations in front of institutions like Presidency University and Asutosh College. The students refrained from attending classes at Moulana Azad College,Jogesh Chandra Law College and City College where Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) controls students unions.
In retaliation, the Trinamool Congress supporters took out a rally carrying the body of Sanatan Hembram,a TMC supporter who was allegedly killed by CPM goons in Lalgarh.
Following the SFI strike call, the government schools remained closed and examinations were postponed in some schools.
Our demand is that those involved in violence at Asutosh College and the killing of Kole should be brought to the book, said Abhishek Mitra, the Kolkata district president of SFI.
The strike has proved the student community does not support violence unleashed by the Trinamool, said Dhrubojyoti Chakraborty, joint secretary of SFI.
SFI representatives will meet the Commissioner of Kolkata Police on Tuesday.
