Even as clamour grows for British Prime Minister David Cameron to express regret over the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is set to honour him during his visit to the Golden Temple on Wednesday.
"We will honour the British PM as per our traditions during his visit to the Golden Temple. He will be presented with a siropa, a model of the temple (Harmandir Sahib) and six books on Sikhism," SGPC secretary Dalmegh Singh said.
In 1997, when Queen Elizabeth II had visited Golden Temple, she too was given a siropa by the SGPC.
Bhushan Behal, president of Jallianwala Bagh Shaheed Parivar Samiti, said: "We want to meet Cameron. We had approached the deputy commissioner and British security personnel but have been denied permission. We wanted to give him a memorandum that he should apologise for the April 13, 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, as he was coming to Amritsar for the first time.''
Sources said that around 2,500 police personnel have been deployed for Cameron's visit to Amritsar.
