Shabana Azmi,Mahesh Bhatt slam protests against ‘Aarakshan’

The movie is based on caste-based reservation in the Indian education system.

Actress Shabana Azmi and filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt have criticised the ongoing protest against Prakash Jha’s film ‘Aarakshan’ calling it ‘shameful’.

The movie which is based on caste-based reservation in the Indian education system is facing flak from certain groups who claim the film is anti-reservation.

“Vandalism against Aarakshan must be condemned in the strongest terms possible. As always those protesting have not even seen the film. Shameful!

“Am outraged that in spite of censor certificate, different groups are trying to prevent its release. Of what use is the Censor Board if after it certifies a film, different groups can prevent it from being released without even watching it! (sic),” Azmi wrote on microblogging site Twitter.

Joining her is filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt who tweeted,”We can’t allow politicians to stop the release of Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan!”

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes had recently dubbed ‘Aarkashan’ as anti-dalit and some protesters took to the streets of Mumbai yesterday to raise slogans against the director and the film.

The movie stars Amitabh Bachchan,Manoj Bajpayee,Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan and is scheduled to be released on Aug 12.
