Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express collects Rs 39 cr,creates history

The film has shattered all previous records including that of Aamir Khan's <i>3 Idiots</i>.

Riding high on the star power of Shah Rukh Khan and a long festive weekend of Eid,director Rohit Shetty’s highly anticipated Chennai Express has collected approx Rs 39 crore in just two days.

Noted film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted the figures which include the paid previews held on Thursday.

The film opened with 80-90 per cent occupancy in theatres pan India.

A solo release this weekend,the film opened with 3,500 prints in India and 700 plus screens overseas. Early morning shows in the capital were not housefull but the film picked momentum by mid-day.

The overseas report card of Chennai Express looks equally impressive.

Taran Adarsh gives the figures: “#ChennaiExpress takes a huge start in USA-Canada. Thursday night preview shows: $ 260,000. Final numbers yet to come in. Awesome!”

In UK Chennai Express witnessed the highest opening day for a Hindi movie. “#ChennaiExpress is on a record-smashing spree in UK as well. Collects £ 258,598 on Friday. HIGHEST opening day for a Hindi movie!”

Chennai Express is also doing well in South India thanks to the clever title and Shah Rukh Khan’s appeal.

In Bangalore the film is running to packed houses and even at a place like Kochi where Hindi movies are a moderate success,the film is doing well

As Tamil actor Vijay’s film Thalaivaa,slated to release on the same day hit a road block in the last minute following some objections,Chennai Express has been “well” received in Tamil Nadu.

The film made Rs 6.75 crores from paid previews alone,according to trade sources,which is the highest till date,beating Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots that made Rs 2.7 crores.

The film produced by UTV Motion Pictures and SRK’s production company Red Chillies,has released in 50 plus countries including places like Morocco,Germany,Switzerland,Austria,France,Israel and Peru. (With PTI inputs)
