If you dont need an excuse to hit the dance floor, dont miss the two-day World Dance Festival at Gurgaons Leela Kempinski where dance instructors from Brazil will be giving exhibition performances and conducting training workshops in a variety of Latin American dances. On till September 13,performances include a slow Tango for an elderly enthusiast,or an energetic routine of Samba de Gafieira, popularly performed at the Carnival in Brazil.
Twenty-five year old Faisca has been teaching the traditional Brazilian Capoeira for over a decade and assures that anyone who enjoys sports will enjoy Capoeira. It is like a fitness routine that helps you burn calories. It might be difficult to master in three days, but we will teach basic movements, says Faisca,a trainer of the Brazilian and Angolan style of Capoeira. This was a slave dance that has evolved over the years. The difference between the two styles of capoeira is that the former is aggressive while the latter has more artistic moves, he explains.
The aim of the festival is to shift focus from just salsa in the country. We want Indians to experience the variety of Latin America dances. We plan to host the festival in New York from next year, says Clelia Angelon of the cosmetic brand,President Surya Brasil.
With over 15 trained artistes conducting 72 workshops spread out three days, the trainers are confident even amateurs will pick up the dances. We will begin the workshop by asking everyone to perform general body movements. This will help us separate the class into two categories, amateurs and those with some potential, explains Rodrigo Delano,33,a trainer in the Brazilian dance form of Zouk, for 18 years. This dance originated after the decline of the lambada dance during the early 90s. Zouk is a fluid and sensual dance form performed with a partner, which involves graceful hip and head movements, he explains, accompanied by his partner Adriano Coutinho,26.
Another lesser known traditional dance,Pagode has its origins in Samba and stresses on quick foot movements. Indian Kathak exponent Uma Sharma and salsa trainer Kaytee Namgyal will be representing India and conducting workshops for enthusiasts. Besides this, workshops in Punjabi and Bollywood dance styles will also be conducted.
