Sham Mall owner’s murder: Case closed, CBI points out lapses in UT Police probe

Less than a month after submitting a closure report in the murder case of Sham Fashion Mall owner Amarjit Singh, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently sent a scathing letter to the Chandigarh Police pointing out certain lapses in the latter's investigation, suggesting that the lapses probably led the case to a dead end.

It has been more than three years since the owner of Sham Fashion Mall, Amarjit Singh, was shot dead point-blank outside his residence in Sector 35. The murder case has been investigated by both the UT police and CBI, but nothing substantial has been concluded.

In October 2009, the case was shifted to the CBI, and it was on November 27 this year that the investigating agency submitted a closure report in the case. The letter — Chandigarh Newsline has a copy of it — to the Chandigarh Police was shot off on December 20. According to the letter, there are four lapses and loss of vital evidence which could have provided useful clues in solving the case.

The letter states that the UT Police did not obtain the call records of Singh and suspects along with the mobile tower dumps of various service providers, of the date of occurrence of crime for the towers covering the scene of crime.

Also, the mobile phone of the deceased was not handed over to the CBI. "The mobile phone of the deceased was taken into possession by the investigating officer of the UT police. However, it appears to have been misplaced as it was not handed over to CBI," notes the letter.

In addition, the CCTV footage of the cameras installed in the Sham Fashion Mall was not collected or taken on record. But Gagndeep Khurana, son of the deceased, said, "We had given the entire record of the CCTV footage in a CD to the police."
