While Dibakar Banerjee’s movie has received a mixed response, audiences continued to patronise the Akshay Kumar starrer in its second weekend

Akshay Kumar scored his second century of the year after his latest release Rowdy Rathore smashed the ‘100 crore mark at the box-office. Kumar’s earlier release Housefull 2 also achieved the distinction this year. Over the weekend UTV Motion Pictures and SLB Productions Rowdy Rathore has collected ‘21.9 crore (second weekend for the film). This has taken the film to the 100 cr club with a total nett collection of ‘101.42 crore,a release from UTV said. After collecting ‘79.52 till last Thursday,Rowdy Rathore added ‘5.1 crore to its kitty on Friday,’6.3 crore on Saturday and ‘10.5 crore on Sunday. “Rowdy Rathore had strong fundamentals ever since it opened on June 1. Akshay Kumar is back with a bang with the movie crossing the ‘100 crore mark. The movie is still going strong at many centres across the country,” trade analyst Amod Mehra said.

Meanwhile,Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai had a mixed response at the box-office. Trade analysts said that the movie under performed at the box-office. “Shanghai started slow, but showed decent growth at hi-end multiplexes on Saturday and Sunday. However, the overall business is below the mark,” trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote on his Twitter profile. “Films like Kahaani,Paan Singh Tomar and now Shanghai are redefining our understanding of audiences. We released the film in about 850 – 875 theatres and the collections have been overwhelmingly strong,” Kamal Gianchandani,President,PVR Pictures, that produced the film said. He refrained from commenting on its box-office performance and production details. The film cost ’19 crore to make and market and Gianchandani said that the movie will be a positive for the production house.

However, while trade analysts affirmed that Shanghai was only being patronised by multiplexes in A centres,Gianchandani said even single screens recorded good business over the weekend. PVR Phoenix in Mumbai and PVR Select City in Delhi earned ‘13.5 lakh nett and ‘15.2 lakh (for Shanghai) while single screens like New Excelsior and Regal in Mumbai grossed ‘2.89 lakh and ‘3.73 lakh respectively. Single screens in Delhi like PVR Plaza and Priya Cinema notched nett collections of ‘6.32 lakh and ‘8.1 lakh over the weekend.

“Single screens have not really shunned the film. The positive reviews and word of mouth publicity saw Shanghai take a jump of almost 75 per cent on Sunday since it opened on Friday. We’re due for a long run and expect to go strong this week too,” Gianchandani said. Mehra, however, said that the film’s collections dropped drastically on Monday.

Trade analysts said they expect Rowdy Rathore’s run at the box-office to continue with the only noteworthy release of the week being Ferrari Ki Sawaari.
