Artist Ananta Mandal takes viewers to the bustling roads of Kolkata, the chattering railways of Mumbai, the shimmering Dal lake of Kashmir and the windswept deserts of Rajasthan in his exhibition being held at Art Portfolio in Sector 9. The exhibition, titled "The Journey", will be held till December 25. The Mumbai-based artist, who studied art in Kolkata, creates an atmosphere of mystery with his watercolours so that elements such as the rain acquire a special beauty in his canvases.

The series "Morning in Kolkata" and "Mystic Lane in Kolkata" depict scenes from West Bengal capital, with the rain-washed roads full of trams, cars and people.

His works on Mumbai convey a sense of serenity, with no human element at the centre of his works. In the series, "Waiting in the Morning", Mandal paints a picture of the engines, as they wait without the crowds dotting the canvas. Mandal focuses on the atmosphere to convey a sense of serenity in his works that depict Nariman Point, towering buildings and the sea of Mumbai.

In contrast, his works on Rajasthan are full of sunny yellows and golden light.
