  • Banker-turned- designer Radhika Gugle will showcase her cocktail dress collection plus an exclusive assortment from overseas

She may not have had formal training in it but practical knowledge of fashion designing was inculcated in her from a young age. And come August 8, an exhibition of her first designer collection of cocktail dresses here will mark Radhika Gugle’s coming of age on the fashion scene. A self-taught designer, Gugle takes inspiration from her mother Sushila Gugle, who is known for her sari and trousseau assortment under the brand Elegancia.

“My mother taught me the intricacies, such as how to give outfits a professional finish. I have worked extensively with her. She is good at all aspects of design,” she says. Gugle, who holds a masters degree in banking and finance, quit a banking job to pursue her passion and held her first exhibition — of children’s wear — a few months back. “In my upcoming show, the collection comprises georgette, chiffon and Swarovski works, so there is a lot of detailing involved. The collection is simple, yet classy and not too flashy. It will also include smart casual and formal tops,” she elaborates. The show, which will be held next Saturday at ‘Hermes’ on Dhole Patil Road, will also have a few dresses sourced from Cambodia. A sneak preview will be held on August 7, she points out.

On plans to launch her own clothing line, she says, “I will particularly focus on children’s wear, along with western outfits. Not much is available in the market apart from the conventional Barbie-type dresses — the potential is tremendous. My collection will have European styles. It will enable children in the city to access a wider, more vibrant range.” Clearly, stylish dreams are made of this.
