The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted two weeks to Shaukat Hussain Guru, serving 10 years imprisonment in the Parliament attack case, to respond to the reply filed by the Delhi Police. Earlier, the Delhi Police counsel justified the sentence awarded to the petitioner for an offence under IPC Section 123 (a) and told the Bench, headed by Justice P P Naolekar, that Guru had information about the criminal conspiracy, but deliberately did not inform the police. Guru is challenging his conviction and sentence on the grounds that the charges under IPC Section 123 (a) were never framed against him and he was never given an opportunity to defend himself on this point. Guru was awarded capital punishment, which was later confirmed by Delhi High Court. The Supreme Court, however, reduced his sentence to 10 years and acquitted him of the charge of criminal conspiracy.
