She could have been raped, killed: Cops

Trying to uncover the mysterious death of 24-year-old Jyoti whose body was found on roadside in Sector 21, Panchkula, the police are not ruling out any possibility. A police officer said there was a chance that she was raped, murdered and then her body was thrown on the roadside.

Police sources said she had terminated her pregnancy earlier. But at the time of death, she was not pregnant. "It is possible to know that a pregnancy has been terminated during post-mortem. But how many times it has been done cannot be established," said a gynaecologist.

As per a preliminary report of post-mortem, it has been established that all the injuries that Jyoti had were post-mortem in nature (the injuries that happen after the death). Samples of her viscera have been sent to the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory, Madhuban. She had a fracture in her skull and ribs.

Jyoti had talked to her father on the phone at 8.30 pm on Wednesday, a night before her body was found lying on the road. "She said that she was going to the market to collect a suit which she had got made for her elder sister," said Buti Ram, father of the deceased. The bag which was found near Jyoti's body had that suit.

A team of officials is on its way to Punjab looking for the contractor of a security agency where Jyoti used to work. Her father said she started living in Chandigarh in 2007. She was good at studies and was doing BEd on her own.

The actual cause of death was not known till the time of filing this report.

Jyoti's body was claimed by her family at 1.30 pm and was cremated at her native village on Friday.

Brother was poisoned

In 2006, Jyoti's brother was also found dead at his native village. Buti Ram, the father of the deceased, said someone had poisoned his son Sukhwinder Singh who was then a student of Class X. "We have no enmity with anyone in our village," Ram said. "Then why should this happen to us?"
