Shift dumping ground: Dadumajra residents

The residents and the members of the Dadumajra ward committee raised slogans against the Administration,Municipal Corporation and JP Associates who are running the Plant. The plant is producing around 30 per cent inerts instead of 10 to 15 per cent as per the detailed project report.

Due to the inerts,the dumping ground is filling up at a faster pace than expected. This is creating problems for the residents of Dadumajra.

Area councillor Kamlesh,who too participated in the dharna,said,“The problem is not of the residents of Dadumajra alone. The stench can be experienced in many parts of the city.”

“Harmful gases are being emitted from the plant. These are endangering the lives of residents across the city. There is a need for immediate action,” he pointed out.

“The Municipal Corporation has been delaying action against the plant,due to which there has been no end to the problem. We will be sitting on dharna till some action is taken. Either the dumping ground should be shifted out or the plant should properly function,” demanded Kamlesh.

A resident of the area said that there is no drainage facility in the dumping ground. After it rains,water enters the colony or remains stagnant. It then becomes the breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies.

Apart from the inerts,there are certain kinds of waste that are not accepted by the plant. These include horticultural waste,vegetable waste and meat waste. This is also contributing to the filling up of the dumping ground.

The attempts of the Municipal Corporation and Chandigarh Administration to find space for another dumping ground have not yielded any results yet.

Protesters disallow dumping; in reply plant refuses garbage

The protesters did not allow inerts from the Dadumajra garbage plant to be dumped at the dumping ground. In retaliation,the plant management refused to accept garbage from the Municipal Corporation (MC). It was later in the evening that the garbage was finally accepted.
