The Shiv Sena’s plan to defy police orders and splash posters, hoardings and cutouts in the city showing Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji killing Afzal Khan to mark the 350th year of the incident as ‘anti-terrorism day’ has fizzled out.
Acting on police advice not to allow any posters without a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the cops first, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday removed 16 such posters from various wards.
Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the civic body, V. Bhonsale, said, “Five boards were removed from C ward while five banners and three cutouts were removed from F South ward. Five boards were removed from F North ward.”
Bhonsale added that neither have any fines been collected nor has action been taken against anyone in connection with erecting of the posters and cutouts.
The police advice, not to allow such posters, came in the backdrop of communal clashes seen in Miraj and Sangli during Ganesh Chaturthi in August. It was a poster of Shivaji Maharaj killing Afzal that was shown in a puja pandal that led to the communal tension.
Joint commissioner of police, Himanshu Roy, had written to the BMC asking it not to allow any posters to be displayed without a no-objection-certificate (NOC) from the police. Many Shiv Sena corporators had on Monday threatened to go ahead and erect the posters without police permission.
