  • Chidambaram
A Sikh journalist lobbed a shoe towards Home Minister P Chidambaram at a press conference at party HQ.

    Communist Party of India (Marxist)

The CPI(M), which could not hide its glee when George W Bush was attacked with a shoe, on Tuesday fumbled for a response when it came to reacting to its Indian variant. At best, the party could say that the journalist’s mode of protest was “inappropriate”.

“In a democracy, people have the freedom to express their protest. This may be one way of expressing it. Now let the law take its own course,” CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said reacting to the Chidambaram shoe-throwing incident. When prodded further, he admitted that the mode of protest was “inappropriate”. “We feel it is not the way to be done. You tell me now. He is from your fraternity,” he shot back.

Yechury’s response to an Iraqi journalist throwing a shoe at former President Bush is a study in contrasts. “It should have happened earlier. It shows the level of anger and anguish people all over the world have against the US president, which our Prime Minister does not understand,” he had said then.

On the issue of the CBI giving a clean chit to Jagdish Tytler, Yechury said “as we have been saying all along, the CBI is used by the party in power for various agendas.”

CPM’s Prakash Karat said,”There is anger among the Sikh community... Obviously there is some anger against Congress for giving the ticket to a leader alleged to have been involved in the anti-Sikh riots.”

    Bharatiya Janata Party

BJP spokesperson Balbir Punj: “We condemn this uncivilised act, but we also feel that this should act as an eye-opener for Congress. For, it shows the deep-rooted hurt over the gross injustice meted out to the Sikhs, even after 25 years of the riots, which killed more than 4,000 people.” “Both Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler should be withdrawn from the elections,” said another BJP spokesperson Sidharth Nath Singh.

Benefits of SHOEcidingBy: Suresh Ram | 10-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward Time is not far away when bombs will replace Shoes. The "Target" of SHOEcide are totally insensitive to the issues which prompted people to SHOEcide!!Most politicians and Judges surely believe that the shoe-throwing incident was good in fact better than the old weapons ie rotten fruits and eggs.Indian Husnabans if thrown by wife understand it is a priliminary sign of 498a and start reading Survivor’s GuidePolitician take them as compliment and Free media publicityJudges use the opputunity to test their power of Contempt Punishment. When shoes were hurled at Bush the Jouno was awarded millions of dollars,When shoes were hurled at P Chidambaram Two politicians lost their LS Ticket. When slippers were thrown at a Pondy judge two policemen got suspension orders! But when few women threw Slippers at the SC Judge they Got immediate bail!!
Shoe attackBy: Ann | 08-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward So shocking to see such an incident has taken place in India that too on Mr. Chidambaram the most respective minister in the ministry so far. let not this happen again in India.
shoe throwingBy: basit | 08-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward It is ashameful act when straight forward people like Chidambaram become targets of shoe throwing. But there are scoundrels holding power and terrorising the nation who should be given worse treatment- that is they should be smeared with pigs shit and huam excreta by the terrorised communities the minorities,. The peoplew who are fit for public humiliatio are Advani, Modi, MM joshi, the Thakery clan,Togadi and the vonom spitting multitude of the safron brigade. They are responsible for making a peaceful India into a terrorised state.
CPM's double standardBy: ramesh k | 08-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward It goes very well in line with the CPM policy. Always speak double standard! Look at the scenario in kerala, where they cry all out talking 'secularism' and protection of minority community, and at the same time, they main ally in the current election is the well-known terrorist group PDP of Abdel Naser Madani, the number one terrorist who is indicted in several blast cases in India! CPM shows no shame in making alliance with this terrorist party, and at the same time calling BJP as communal! In fact today, BJP is the only 'secular' or nationalist party in the country, both communists and congress are utter 'communal', just take simple example from Kerala! CPM in alliance with PDP, a terrorist group, and congress is in alliance with NDF/SIMI another terrorist group! But both these parties call BJP as communal! What a joke, people will slowly but definitely realize this and cast their votes accordingly.
Shoe HurlingBy: Varind | 08-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward Shoe hurling action was not delibrate but was a sudden reaction of hurt sentiments. After all there is a limit of patience. 25 years is not a small period to wait for justice and then suddenly CBI comes up with clean chit to alleged accused on the eve of ele tions. This has clealry been done on the behest of Congress where the PM is a mute spectator.Of courseshoe throwing incidence is condemnable but why politicians keep on teasing the conscience of the people during election by digging the old wounds. The raking up past issues like Operation Blue Star, killing of sikhs 1984, demolition of Baberi Mosque and 2002 riots near elections is dangerous trend and this has to be avoided in the interest of democracy.
