New Delhi, September 24: : For all his anti-tobacco campaigns, Health Minister A Ramadoss must be getting quite a high every morning when he enters Nirman Bhawan, his office, seeing an “entering a no tobacco area” billboard before the gate.

The irony of the situation is that the champion of anti-tobacco campaigns in India has a small problem. Shops behind the very billboard near the gate sell tobacco products.

“If you smoke inside (the gate), you will get challaned (fined) but here its okay. It’s the gate that is the boundary,” says one of the shopkeepers selling the tobacco products.

As per the latest direction by the Health Ministry due to come into effect from October 2, the only two places where one can smoke will be either at home, with the permission of one’s family members, and on roads. Everything else has been included in the domain of ‘public place’.

This notification has come up for a lot of flak from various sections of the society, the latest being ITC Ltd which approached the Delhi High Court against the Centre's notification banning smoking in private offices, contending the Government’s authority to take such a decision.

So, with the Health Minister trying to rid the citizens of the country of all their unhealthy habits, he might have reached a roadblock or just maybe forgotten to look into his own backyard.

Nothing wrong with Ramadoss' decision by Sriram on 2008-09-25 08:52:03.447188+05:30
Ramadoss cannot be faulted for insisting that smokers stick to their homes and the roads. Where does personal freedom get hurt in this order? He is not banning smoking or tobacco companies, is he? Why should the non-smokers suffer from the toxic fumes coming from a smoker's lungs?
I oppose this by satya on 2008-09-25 08:45:26.692772+05:30
If no one smokes how will people die. Already the population is 1.4billion.. it is exploding..Let people who want to smoke enjoy it and die peacefully..those who learn to avoid smoking can live happily. Survival of fittest here means quit smoking on your own if you want to live..No point in putting laws.
Personal and public by frank krishner on 2008-09-25 06:12:36.796746+05:30
Ramadoss has gone too far. There is something known as personal choice. However, it must be noted that England has also put in place laws that ban smoking in private offices, but each office has a smoking area for employees who smoke, I believe. Just because I don't smoke, or drink, or eat meat, I do not have the right to prevent others from doing so as long as they respect my personal space by not smoking, or drinking , or eating meat in it. what they do in their own spaces should be of no concern to the government.

Wrong Facts
by vinay on 2008-09-25 08:42:09.567964+05:30
Wrong Facts. UK law doesn't ask for each office to have a smokers area and infact discourages it as it's additional cost to the business and non-smokers. Also most of the offices don't have it. In addition smokers can't smoke near the office building, so that the smoke should not come via window or air duct, also enterance/exits are definate non-smokers area so that non-smokers don't have to pass through smoke area. In addition cigerattes are taxed so much that smokers are decreasing there. All this is not still part of law or practice in India and smokers are increasing in India with almost every 5 Indian a tobacco consumer.

One off the jokers of the UPA govt:. To be specefic from the sonia congress. mr. R DOSS THING THAT HE IS THE ONLY WISE DR in the whole India and the others are fools . He should be treated in AIIMS especially by Dr. venugopal and finally by a shock treatment from some mental hospitals. The good for nothing Dr is after smoking/drinking. Wastimg the precious time of the Govt: the people of India is 99.9íucated and they know what is good/bad and for that no Dr M P is required in the ministry at the expence of the tax payers money. Let him clean up his U P A M Ps and mps of other parties who are DRUNKCARDS and chain smokers and then improve the health of the public.
Smoking in public by John Joshva Raja on 2008-09-25 02:26:09.445454+05:30
I will make the Cigarette companies to pay for all the health problems they cause. I will request the government to remove cigarette from basic necessities so that it can be taxed 300 to 400 percent. Which means if a cigarette is 25 rupees it will automatically encourage people to reduce! This money can be used for paying the medical bills in the Government hospitals. Though I still welcome the ban but the alternative is to charge the smokers and the companies with taxes.
Good Job Ramadoss by Rishit on 2008-09-24 22:21:42.18133+05:30
I think he is doing a great job. By banning smoking in public places, non smokers can atleast avoid the harmful stuff at work, at hospitals, stations etc. One had to either request a smoker to stop smoking or just stay frustrated and watch the other guy blow up fumes in the air. Atleast that is taken care of. Banning tobacco companies isnt a great option either. Those who wish to smoke may do so but not at the cost of causing inconvienience to others. Thats what this ban takes care of.
India Please Stop Smoking ok. by K.V.Shriram on 2008-09-24 21:15:02.869735+05:30
I used to be a smoker, it does irritates people standing near to a smoker, even smokers do not like second hand smoke or some one smoking near them. People have to forced to quit and if so they may smoke in their houses or roof tops but not in public places. Govt. is doing a good job in making people understand. Thanks. K.V.Shriram -- Chennai

shopkeeper by gourav gupta on 2008-09-24 19:34:56.392598+05:30
by publishing this story you have put the livelyhood of shopkeeper behind the gate in danger. Ramdoss who went to the extent of passing a cabinet law to ensure removal of AIIIMS director will surely try to vent his anger on the poor shopkeepers one way or the other.. I hope it is just my imagination
Ban on Smoking by shan on 2008-09-24 17:57:15.062573+05:30
I want to ask our health minister why is not banning the tabaco companies. if these companies will be banned automatically no body will smoke are eat tabaco products. our govt is telling people not to drink, but they are opening wine shops every where so this way nothing will be banned,. so i request to our honrable minister to ban thioose manufacturing comapnies.

kindly mind your language. are you for or anti tobacco? how did the sexist imagery come into your post? this is also a typically indian way of putting things. just because everyone talks rot, rot does not become wholesome.

ppl- let us not get excited here. Govt cannot ban Tobacco industry, bcoz - the industry itself employs several lakhs of people.2) Govt cannot take away the right of smoking from a citizen . remember India is democratic country. What it can do is - reduce passive smoking hazard to other people by regulation and try pursuade smokers from quiting by incentives.
