An RTI query has finally got the Delhi Police cracking. In a bid to prepare a response to an RTI petition, the Delhi Police has now made it mandatory for its personnel to show updated pollution certificates every time they get their government vehicles refilled.
Delhi Police sources have said an RTI applicant had sought information on the number of government vehicles used by the police that have undergone pollution checks and have updated Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates.
Soon after the RTI petition was tabled,an order on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (provisions and logistics) was issued mandating that all police officials using government vehicles will have to show the pollution certificates of their respective vehicles to have their petrol tanks refilled.
Strict instructions were given to officials deputed at certain petrol filling stations, a senior police officer said. If any police official refuses to show the pollution certificate of the vehicle he wants refilled or misbehaves or argues, officials at the filling station can feel free to complain about the same to senior police officers.
Confirming the move,Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said,It is mandatory to have pollution certificates for the official vehicles policemen use. To make sure they have one,it has been made compulsory to show the certificate before they can get their vehicles refilled.
Sources, however, said that the step was taken as when, while preparing a reply for the RTI query,it was found out that only a paltry number of government vehicles used by the Delhi Police had updated pollution certificates. To make sure the RTI reply had a substantial number to show for it,the Delhi Police issued this directive.
By the time the reply to the RTI query would be filed, the police will have more vehicles with pollution certificates to cite, the police sources added.
The Delhi Police have around 2,000 government vehicles; there are about a dozen filling stations situated within police station premises in the Capital. For example, police personnel deputed in South Delhi usually get their vehicles refilled from the pumps installed inside the Defence Colony police station.
Sources said soon after the order was passed, many police officials procured certificates for their vehicles.
