Though the city experienced showers in the past two days, some of the rural areas are still facing a drought-like situation. At present, 16 tankers are on duty to Baramati, Ambegaon, Indapur, Shirur, Daund, Junnar. A meeting with the district collector and the water department of the Public Works Department (PWD) is slated for August 20.
Deputy collector Sanjay Shinde, who is in charge of the water shortage situation in the district, said the past two days of light showers have come as a welcome relief for the rural areas.
“We have to construct 350 borewells in the dry patches and we have also take out fresh orders for nine of them. We are waiting it to be sanctioned,” he said.
The month of June and even July did not see good rainfall in these areas. “We have been issued orders that we would not be giving water for irrigation purpose.
All the water in the dams has been reserved for drinking purpose.
There is severe water shortage in Baramati, Daund, Shirur, Khed, Ambegaon and Junnar and all arrangements are being made to cater to the requirements.
A plan to cater to these areas as well increase the tanker services will be worked out in Thursday’s meeting, said Shinde.
