The SIB didn't deny that Sadik was a member of Dawood Ibrahim gang but told the CBI that following the interrogation, it came to a conclusion that the intelligence input was not true and the report was forwarded to New Delhi before he was killed.
SIB Assistant Director Ambady Gopinathan has also told CBI as a witness that following the concluding report several officials kept watching Sadiq's move and even visited his home in Bhavnagar and Ahmedabad.
Gopinathan also said the officials kept visiting Sadiq who had been apprehended at Crime Intelligence Unit, Andheri, under the custody of police inspector Pradeep Sharma.
"Gururaj Savadatti (a SIB official) had submitted a source report that Sadiq Jamal, a member of D-gang had arrived from Dubai with an intention to kill right wing Hindu leaders and left for Ahmedabad to survey some targets. Upon Savadatti's input, Sadiq was apprehended for verification of the fact. But, there was no substance in the input that Sadiq had intention to cause any harm to VVIPs as alleged in the initial source report," Gopinath told CBI.
On the other hand, Ahmed Abdul Karim alias Zahid, the person who brought Sadiq to SIB officials, has said before a magistrate that Savadatti was trying to hand over Sadiq's custody to the Gujarat police. CBI is yet to grill Savadatti in the case. According to CBI chargesheet, Zahid is a brother of Tariq Parveen, who lives in Dubai and a D-gang member. Sadiq had been working as a domestic help at Parveen's home before he was deported back in October 2002, the chargesheet states.
CBI chargesheet also claims that Sadik had an altercation with Dawood Ibrahim's strongman Salim Chiplun at Parveen's house in Dubai following which prompted Sadiq to take help from Dubai police. However, he was deported back. The reason behind the scuffle is not clear.
