Siblings killed as truck rams scooter in Sewri

Humaira Ansari (9), and her brother Tanvir (4) were flung head first against the divider, the family said. Ansari took them in a taxi to KEM Hospital where Tanvir was declared dead. Humaira died an hour later. Neither of the children was wearing a helmet, police said.

The deaths cast a pall on the family and Sewri's Kamla Nagar neighbourhood a day before Eid. Ansari had taken his children and 7-year-old nephew Shafi to watch a procession in Bhendi Bazaar. At 9.30 pm, as they were riding past Sewri Municipal School, a truck turning left hit the scooter from behind.

Police said the driver of the truck, Phoolchand Ramavtar Prajapati (21) did not attempt to flee, and was arrested. He was produced before a magistrate on Friday and remanded in judicial custody until February 7. The truck, belonging to Kohinoor Roadways, Vadodara, has been impounded.

"We have charged Prajapati under sections 304 (A) and 279 IPC for causing death by negligence and rash driving. He was neither speeding nor drunk," Sub-Inspector Pratap Ghadge of the RAK Marg police station said.

The children's mother Sameena was inconsolable on Friday evening. "They had gone out to have fun. I cannot believe my gudiya hasn't returned," she wailed.

"Humaira was a very bright child. She looked so pretty on the day she won the fancy dress competition in her school," said a neighbour.
