The call of 'Punjab Bandh' by Dal Khalsa on November 3 has led to confusion among educational institutions in the city. The Dal Khalsa has given a call for bandh to protest against the government ‘inaction’ in punishing the accused of 1984 riots. Various Sikh organisations, including Damdami Taksal, Sikh Students’ Federation (Mehta) and Khalsa Action Committee have supported the organisation to observe bandh.
Talking to Newsline, Paramjeet Singh Khalsa, President, Sikh Students' Federation, Ludhiana unit, said, "Twenty-five years have passed but the government has not punished the accused of the 1984 riots. The men who killed Indira Gandhi have been punished though. We want to press upon our demand to punish the guilty."
But the call of the bandh has created a lot of confusion among different educational institutions. While authorities of many institutes kept confirming from the District Education Office to know as if the state government had declared holiday on November 3 or not.
Meanwhile, some private schools have declared holiday as a preventive measure. Requesting anonymity, a school principal said, "To avoid undue harassment, we have declared holiday on November 3. Students will get three consecutive offs as Gurpurab falls on Monday."
Amarjit Kaur, District Education Officer (Secondary), Ludhiana, said, "We have not received any instructions to declare a holiday on November 3. So, all the government schools will function as usual."
